Sea Turtles

Room locator:

There are two main types of sea turtles that nest along the coasts of Northern Cyprus: these are the Caretta and the green turtles (Chelonia Mydas). Both are listed as endangered and under strict protection.

Since 1992, the Marine Turtle Research Group, in collaboration with the Turtle Protection Society of Northern Cyprus and the Department of Environmental Protection, has been conducting an annual survey documenting turtle activity during the summer months.

In the company of volunteers, you can participate in this unique event. About fifty days after the turtles have laid their eggs, small beetles begin to emerge above the sand surface. It is a fantastic and one-time experience that takes place on about forty nesting beaches throughout Northern Cyprus. Everyone is welcome to come and see up to a hundred of these amazing little creatures, whose length does not exceed 6-7 cm.

During the laying season it is very important to maintain rules of conduct, in order to protect the sea turtles that go up to the shore, the nests (and the eggs inside them) and of course, the little turtles that will eventually hatch and make their way to the sea.

The best times to watch hatching are late July, August and early September.
