A BIT OF HISTORY

We are usually told that the Turks invaded the island in 1974 and continue from there. To better understand the background, one has to go back to 1878. In the Berlin Agreement, made that year, the Ottomans gave the British a sort of mandate over Cyprus. But, in 1914, without asking too many questions, the British made Cyprus one of the crown colonies. The decline of the British Empire later left the island in a state of obscurity.

In 1954 the Greeks on the island demanded the unification of Cyprus with Greece. The Turks demanded control of the island from the British. The conflict led to the ugly deportation of ethnic Greeks from Istanbul and riots by ethnic Turks in Cyprus. In the face of the mess, Greece, Turkey, and Britain agreed in 1960 that the island would gain independence. However, relations between the Greek and Turkish communities on the island continued to deteriorate and in 1974 a Greek military junta took over Cyprus intending to unite with Greece.
