Major Cities In Northern Cyprus

Room locator:

Famagusta

The second largest city in Northern Cyprus after Nicosia, is considered the leading port city in Northern Cyprus. Located north of Nicosia. Here you can enjoy pristine and unspoiled blue beaches, stroll through the famous Mustafa market and the walled old town and visit and be impressed by the city’s culture and architecture. The World Heritage Foundation (GFA), declared in 2010 that Famagusta, a medieval city, is one of the twelve most important archeological sites in the world and contains remains from the destruction.

Kyrenia

A port city located in Beşparmak, a mountain ridge south of the coastline. It is very nice to wander during the day in the city center, to be impressed by the round tower built during the reign of the Cypriot King Lucinian in the 13th century and to descend through the alleys to the ancient and picturesque Kyrenia port where you will find bars and restaurants, cruise to Kyrenia beaches and tourist information bureau.

Northern Nicosia (Lefkoşa)

The city’s long history goes back to the Early Bronze Age (3rd millennium BCE). In the 7th century BCE, Nicosia was part of the kingdom of Ledra, one of the ancient kingdoms of the island. The city has been the capital of the island since the Byzantine period and is located about a half hour drive from Kyrenia.

The most impressive site is the restored Khan (Büyük Han) which now houses art galleries, shops, restaurants and cafes. Do not miss the visit to the two small quarters. One of them is Samanbahçe – a neighborhood of about 70 one-story houses built in the early 20th century and beautifully restored. The houses are used as housing for the elderly. A second neighborhood is called Arapahmet. Here, too, Ottoman houses from the early 20th century have returned to the balconies, windows and architectural lines that characterize them. The interesting buildings in the Old City are too numerous for us to mention in this short list, but it is very easy to discover them by wandering around the city.
